Sweet Rose Creamery is a small, L.A.-based chain of ice cream shops with an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients. Their kitchen is 100% GMO free and certified kosher. Most excitingly to me is that their ice cream is made and stored in silver canisters, which is how traditional Italian gelato is made! I went to their storefront in the Pacific Palisades. Parking is pretty much limited to street parking, so bring quarters!
For ice cream flavors, Sweet Rose has ‘the classics,’ which are traditional ice cream flavors and always offered, and ‘chef’s picks’ which are seasonal flavors that change periodically. They also have a few dairy free options. I tried one flavor from each of the two categories.
I went with Fresh Mint with Chocolate Chips and Brown Butter with Orange Wafer Cookies on a homemade vanilla waffle cone. The mint ice cream was the best mint ice cream I’ve ever had (although I would not recommend it unless you are a mint-lover). It didn’t taste like traditionally mint ice cream, instead, it tasted like an actual mint leaf. The flavor lingered in my mouth for the rest of the day and it felt like I was chewing on mint leaves all day.
The brown butter ice cream was not my favorite. The flavors were nice, but there were actual pieces of orange wafer cookie in the ice cream, which really messed with its texture. The cookies became a little soggy which made the ice cream gritty.
I also sampled the summer corn ice cream which was actually very good! It reminded me of the Mexican sweet corn dessert. The homemade waffle cone was also really good! I went with the vanilla flavor, but there was also a chocolate waffle cone option, which sounds fun. Overall, the quality of ice cream at Sweet Rose was very good and I’m excited to try more fun flavors in the future!
