Poppy + Rose is a breakfast and lunch place located in the heart of the Flower District in DTLA, as the name so aptly implies. Poppy + Rose specializes in classic American comfort food, with the signature LA twist of fresh, local ingredients and highly instagrammable walls.

Parking in the Flower District can be difficult, I’d recommend parking in the paid lot at the corner of Maple and E. 8th Street.

Poppy + Rose is most famous for their signature Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Waffles. They did not disappoint! The outside of chicken was deliciously crispy while the inside remained soft and moist. The waffles had a nice sweet flavor and were very light and fluffy. The chives also added a fun brightness to an otherwise heavy dish. All in all it was a seriously well-executed breakfast classic.

I’ve also tried the Pulled Pork Hash (not pictured) and the Breakfast Sandwich. The Breakfast Sandwich was very good. I always love a brioche bun and the egg was the perfect amount of runny. The house aioli was also very good. Overall, a very solid breakfast sandwich, but not the best I’ve ever had.

The Pulled Pork Hash wasn’t great for me. I loved it at first, but the more I ate it, the weirder it got for me. It’s made with a hash brown brick, with pulled pork and an egg of your choice stacked on top (I went with over easy). The flavor combination of pulled pork and egg didn’t totally work for me, and the pulled pork is so saucy, it turned the crispy hash browns in mush.

Poppy + Rose also has an extensive wine and cocktails menu that I have yet to try.

After breakfast, I’d recommend walking around the Flower District a bit. There are loads of beautiful shops all around filled with flowers and succulents to admire.

I’m already looking forward to my next trip to Poppy + Rose!
