Magpies is a soft serve ice cream shop with two storefronts, both of which are in L.A. I went to their newest location in Tarzana.
Magpies makes all of their soft serve from scratch and all of their toppings are made in-house. Their flavors are complex and interesting and they offer many dairy free options as well. In the Tarzana location they had 4 soft serve machines with two flavors per machine. Like with traditional soft serve, you had the option of swirling together two neighboring flavors, or choosing flavors individually. When I was there half of the flavors were vegan. Some of the more exciting flavors included pistachio baklava and apple pie.
I chose sweetened cream and strawberry hibiscus swirled together with almond brittle as my topping. It was very good! The ice cream was soft and creamy and the flavors were strong but not overpowering. The more I ate the ice cream, the more I liked it. The almond brittle was amazing! It dissolved in your mouth and the flavor really lingered, in a good way.
Magpies is able to preserve the nostalgia of soft serve ice cream while giving it a more ‘grown-up’ twist with complex flavors and high quality ingredients. Next time I think I want to try their ‘coffee and donuts’ flavor with chocolate covered honeycomb as a topping!
