I’ve been going to Dodger games since I was a baby. My family has always been a baseball family and, living just outside of LA, the Dodgers are our team!
The Dodgers are one of the oldest teams in baseball, established in 1883 in Brooklyn, New York. The Dodgers were named after their fans who were nicknamed “trolley dodgers” because they had to avoid all the trolleys on their way to games. The team moved to Los Angeles in 1958 and played at the Los Angeles Coliseum for a few years before moving into Dodger Stadium, located in Chavez Revine. The Dodgers have won 6 World Series Championships: 1955, 1959, 1963, 1965, 1981, and 1988.
The Dodgers also have the only player who’s number is retired throughout all of baseball. Jackie Robinson, #42, was the first black MLB player. He played 2nd baseman for the Dodgers for all 10 years of his MLB career and he was a phenomenal baseball player. He was the MLB rookie of the year in 1947, National League MVP in 1949, National League batting champion in 1949, National League stolen base leader in 1947 and 1949, he was a six time All-Star from 1949-1954, and he helped lead the Dodgers to their first World Series win in 1955.
Going to a baseball game at Dodger Stadium is one of my favorite things to do in L.A. I always get a Dodger Dog (with mustard and onions) and garlic fries! Be forewarned, the garlic fries are not for the faint of heart. For dessert, I usually like the chocolate malt or the frozen lemonade, which you can get at the food stands or from the vendors walking through the seats. Do you have favorite baseball food?
There is a bit of debate about the best seats in a baseball stadium, but I prefer to sit behind home plate, even if that means I have to go all the way up to the top deck. I think it offers the best view of the whole game and you can see all of the Jumbotrons which makes it easier to follow along.
Baseball is simple enough that anyone can watch it and understand it, but the more you watch the sport the more you realize its complexities and the more you enjoy it! Baseball is also one of the only major sports that does not have a clock. The game ends after nine innings (or sometimes more if the ninth inning ends in a tie) so the games can be long. But that’s part of the fun of it! So grab a dodger dog, sit back and enjoy the game!
