I have recently discovered my love for falafel. I’ve eaten it before, but it never left much of an impression on me. But then, one day, I discovered a little place in Universal City called Joe’s Falafel. It changed my life. Well, maybe it didn’t change my life, but I have become newly obsessed with falafel since eating there.
Located just across the freeway from Universal Studios, Joe’s Falafel seems unassuming, but let me assure you, they have some of the best Mediterranean food in Los Angeles. Joe’s Falafel is situated in a very small strip mall with a parking lot with about a dozen spots. I haven’t had trouble getting a spot in the shared parking lot yet, but if the lot is full, there is metered street parking right in front.
When going to Joe’s falafel, you obviously have to order the falafel. My go-to order the falafel plate which comes with 6 falafels, pita, hummus, rice, and a small salad. The falafel and hummus are the real stars of the show for me. The falafel has a crisp exterior and soft interior, which gives the whole thing a nice crunch. The falafels are freshly made so they come to you hot and fresh and full of flavor and a little spicy. The hummus is smooth and creamy and also well-seasoned.
I have also had the chicken shawarma plate from Joe’s Falafel, which is also out of this world. Honestly, the best chicken shawarma I’ve had. The chicken was so moist and the flavors were amazing. There was also a little bit of a crispy exterior to the chicken which was wonderful.
The restaurant itself is fairly simple, and it’s not in the most insta-worthy neighborhood, but if you’re looking for some phenomenal Mediterranean food, look no further than Joe’s Falafel!
