I’ve been wanting to try Cauldron Ice Cream for months now, and I finally got my chance on National Ice Cream Day! Cauldron Ice Cream is located in Glendale, near the Americana at Brand. It is a long, narrow shop with only a few barstool seats. There is paid street parking in front of the store.
Cauldron Ice Cream makes handcrafted ice cream using liquid nitrogen and a sweet cream base to make ice cream to order in just a few seconds (not including time spent in line)! It’s really fun to watch the counter overflow with a liquid nitrogen cloud every few seconds as the employees fulfill your order. The ice cream is phenomenal, but their “puffle” cone is what propelled them into internet stardom.
Cauldron Ice Cream rotates their ice cream flavors every month (you can check their website for updates). I ordered the Sea Salted Caramel Crunch, which is made up of caramel ice cream mixed with pretzel bits for a nice, salty crunch. My ice cream was also topped with a ribbon of caramel and some sea salt. It was so good! In my quest to find the best ice cream in LA, I often find that “Instagram” ice cream is cute, but the flavors are lacking. However, at Cauldron, the ice cream was delicious, not just cute! The flavor was complex, well developed, and it didn’t hit you in the face with sweetness. The texture of the ice cream was also very soft and creamy. Make sure to ask for your ice cream to be shaped like a rose. It doesn’t cost anything extra and it looks so pretty!
I went with my family, so I also got to try H20 Rose, Earl Grey Lavender, and Vietnamese Coffee. All of the flavors were strong, but not overly sweet. I love coffee, so I might’ve liked the coffee flavor the best (it tastes like strong coffee!) but I was immensely impressed with the H20 Rose and Earl Grey Lavender flavors. Sometimes with floral flavors it can feel like you’re eating perfume, but the Cauldron ice cream had a strong flavor without being cloying.
Cauldron offers 3 types of Puffle cones; traditional, churro, and red velvet. I got to try the traditional and the churro. I really liked both of them! It felt like eating a puffy waffle cone. The flavor was basically the same to that of a traditional waffle cone, but the texture was closer to that of a breakfast waffle. You should choose whichever Puffle flavor is most intriguing to you, not the one that will go the best with your ice cream. The cones are difficult to eat at the same time as the ice cream so they become separate entities. The Puffle Cones were fairly expensive ($7 per cone), but they were very big and included a lot of ice cream, so you could share with a friend if you wanted to.
I really enjoyed my experience at Cauldron Ice Cream. The ice cream was phenomenal, both in flavor and texture, and the Puffle was a fun take on a traditional waffle cone. I can’t wait to go back!
