I have worked in Calabasas for almost 2 years now, and today was my first time trying Shibuya. Fans of Shibuya claim that it is one of the best sushi restaurants in Los Angeles, and I don’t know that I would disagree.
I was warned ahead of time that the wait can get pretty long, but I came into the restaurant on a Friday for a late-lunch, so I thought I’d be fine. Boy was I wrong! When I got there, there were half a dozen parties waiting to be seated. Luckily for me, I was dining solo and could squeeze into the bar without much of a wait at all.
Part of why there is always a loooooong wait for Shibuya is because the restaurant itself is so small. The sushi bar probably fits about 15 people and there are only about 6 tables. Parking also isn’t great, it is located in a small strip mall by the Calabasas Commons, but the parking lot is pretty small.
I ordered salmon sushi, albacore sushi, scallop sushi, and the Shibuya roll. Everything was amazing! My favorite was the salmon sushi (but salmon sushi usually is my favorite anyway). It was so flavorful and buttery, some of the best salmon I’ve ever had! I also really enjoyed the albacore. It tasted very fresh and light. The Shibuya roll is a really fun roll! It has crab, tempura, and avocado and the sushi chefs pack it very generously with fish! You also have the option to sub out the seaweed for rice paper, but I went with the classic seaweed. The scallop sushi was good, but not my favorite. The fish still tasted fresh, but they add a light sauce to it that makes it a little sourer than I’m used to.
Overall, I can get behind the hype, Shibuya serves fresh, delicious fish and their chefs clearly know what they’re doing. Maybe next time I’ll try the spicy tuna on a rice cake!
