I first heard about Batterfish because they were featured on an episode of Diners Drive-ins and Dives. Being L.A.-based and one of the few food trucks I’ve ever seen on the show, I knew I needed to try it! I’ve been following them on Instagram for weeks now, which is where they announce where they’ll be parked for the day, but I hadn’t been able to stop by yet. Cue my delight when they happened to be parked at Stub Hub Stadium during a Chargers game is was attending!
Everything was very expensive, even for food truck standards, so I think the prices may have been inflated because we were at a football game. I ordered the classic cod fish and chips ($16), it did not disappoint! The cod was light and flaky and it was fried in a thin, crispy layer of batter. It was one of the best fish and chips I’ve ever had (and I spent 2 months in the UK eating primarily fish and chips). There was only one piece of fish, but it was a fairly large filet, so I was satisfied after my meal. The ‘chips’ part of the dish was also really good. The fries were thick and potato-y and very well-seasoned! They also weren’t too greasy, which I think is important for fish and chips because the fried fish is already pretty greasy. The tartar sauce was very refreshing, which is not an adjective I ever thought I’d use to describe tartar sauce. Batterfish uses capers in their tartar sauce, which adds a note of brightness to otherwise heavy tartar sauce.
My only complaint was that, for the price, I didn’t think it was a lot of food. $16 is pretty expensive for fish and chips. I would’ve liked to try some of their other food, but I didn’t want to spend any more money. I’m hoping the prices were inflated because they were parked at a stadium, because the food was awesome, and I definitely want to try more in the future. I’m most interested in their salmon fish and chips!
