Zankou Chicken is a small L.A.-based chain that serves up amazing Lebanese food! The first location opened in Hollywood, but they now have locations in Anaheim, Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, Toluca Lake, Van Nuys, West L.A., and my personal favorite, Tarzana.
I always order the quarter chicken plate, which includes pita bread, hummus, pickled turnips and tomatoes, garlic spread, and 2 pieces of rotisserie chicken (your choice of dark or light meet).
The rotisserie chicken is cooked in a vertical oven for over an hour, creating a crispy outside and a juicy inside, but the star of the meal for me is the hummus and pita. Baked fresh every day, the pita is warm and soft, and the hummus is some of the best I’ve ever had.
Zankou is also famous for its garlic spread, which tastes great on the chicken or the pita if you’re a fan of garlic, which I am. The garlic flavor very sharply contrasts the creamy, butter-like texture of the spread itself.
Parking at the Tarzana location is primarily for compact-sized cars, and the restaurant itself isn’t much to look at. But there is some outdoor seating perfect for a sunny, L.A. day, and the food does not disappoint!
